- 0:00These three sentences all give a reason.
- 0:18But look at the verb: it sits in a different place in each one.
- 0:23Pick the right word with the wrong word order, and the examiner sees a grammar mistake.
- 0:28In four minutes you will learn the three places a German verb can go, the pairs that trip people up, and five traps from our German B1 kit.
- 0:38In a German statement, the verb takes second place.
- 0:42Connectors decide what happens to it, and there are only three possibilities.
- 0:47Group one does not count: aber, denn, und, sondern and oder sit in front, and the sentence carries on as normal.
- 1:03Group two takes first place itself, so the verb jumps in right after it, before the subject: deshalb, trotzdem and dann work this way.
- 1:18Group three sends the verb all the way to the end: weil, obwohl, dass, wenn and als.
- 1:33Learn which group a connector belongs to, and you know its word order.
- 1:38Here is the catch: most meanings come in all three groups.
- 1:42For a reason and its result, denn keeps the order, deshalb pulls the verb forward, and weil sends it to the end.
- 1:52For a contrast, aber keeps the order, trotzdem pulls the verb forward, and obwohl sends it to the end.
- 2:01And two look-alikes are not connectors at all: wegen and trotz take a noun, not a whole sentence.
- 2:13Your turn: pause now and pick the word that fits.
- 2:21It is denn: after it, the subject comes first and the verb second.
- 2:32With weil, the verb would move to the end of the sentence.
- 2:37Now five traps from our kit, each with the note that comes on its card.
- 2:42After a negative, the correction needs sondern.
- 2:50Using aber here is the classic error.
- 2:54Pause again: which word fits this sentence?
- 3:02It is als: German uses it for one event in the past, and wenn for repeated events, the present and the future.
- 3:17With seitdem, German keeps the present tense where English says "I have been".
- 3:27Um with zu works only when both parts share one subject; with two different people, use damit.
- 3:45And weder with noch is already negative, so never add nicht or kein.
- 3:57Connectors earn points in the B1 exams in two ways.
- 4:01In the writing tasks, coherence has its own marks, and connectors are the main way to show it.
- 4:08In the telc exam, gap texts test them directly.
- 4:12Our German B1 kit has one hundred connector cards, each tagged with the task where it helps most: forty-eight for writing, twenty-seven for speaking, and the rest for reading and listening.
- 4:25So: group one keeps the order, group two pulls the verb forward, and group three sends it to the end.
- 4:33Try them in our free practice letter: ten gaps in the shape of the telc task, marked at once, with every answer explained.
- 4:41The link is below, next to a free check of your B1 words.
Ein fünfminütiges Video zu den Konnektoren auf B1: die drei Gruppen nach Wortstellung (eine lässt die Reihenfolge, wie sie ist, eine zieht das Verb nach vorn, eine schickt es ans Ende), die Paare mit gleicher Bedeutung in verschiedenen Gruppen und fünf Fallen aus den Karten des Prüfungs-Kits Deutsch B1: sondern, als oder wenn, seitdem, um zu oder damit und weder noch.
