Who needs this certificate

How the exam works

  1. 1 Register at a centreRegister online on siele.org: choose the option, a centre and a date, and pay there.
  2. 2 PrepareLearn the words and phrases of the level, then practise the tasks with model tests. With the kit, enter your exam date and the plan gives you a daily number of new cards.
  3. 3 Exam dayOn a computer at a SIELE centre (some options can be taken remotely). Speaking is recorded by the computer, not in front of an examiner. Bring a valid photo ID.
  4. Results and certificateOnline, usually within about three weeks: a score out of 1,000 (up to 250 per skill), each matched to a CEFR level.

ReadingReading texts are written around the exam topics: the topic words and the connectors let you follow the argument and find the answers faster.
ListeningRecordings use the same topic words and everyday spoken phrases; knowing them by ear, with the audio, is what makes listening easier.
WritingThe writing tasks reward ready phrases for each text type, linking words, natural word combinations and accurate grammar.
SpeakingSpeaking goes more smoothly with phrases for giving opinions, agreeing, disagreeing and planning, and with linking words to structure what you say.

How it is marked

No pass or fail: each skill gets a score that maps to a CEFR level, so you aim for the B2 band in each.

Questions about SIELE

Which level do I need for SIELE, and what is it for?

SIELE gives a score per skill; for a B2 requirement you aim for the B2 band in each skill asked for. Check that the university or employer accepts SIELE.

How long does it take to prepare, and how many words do I need?

Commonly quoted estimates are about 500–600 hours of guided learning to reach B2 from scratch. If you are already one level below, expect a few months of regular study. The Spanish DELE B2 Exam Kit has 3,790 cards: at 20 new cards a day, about 16 minutes with reviews, you see every card in about 28 weeks. Does the SIELE certificate expire?

Yes. The SIELE certificate is valid for five years.

Can I retake just one part of SIELE?

SIELE has no pass or fail. You can sit it again, or book an option that covers only the skills you want to improve; see siele.org for the options.

How and when do I get my SIELE results?
