Vocabulary size tests measure how many words you recognize. Synonym questions measure something deeper: whether you know a word well enough to connect it to its alternatives. That's the difference between passive recognition and being able to rephrase, which is what real conversation constantly demands. Each quiz samples words with editor-curated synonyms from our CEFR-leveled decks. Dedicated pages: Spanish synonym quiz (3,198+ words) · French synonym quiz (1,347+ words) · German synonym quiz (1,972+ words) · Italian synonym quiz (442+ words) · Portuguese synonym quiz (270+ words) · English synonym quiz (2,138+ words).
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no signup and works on phone and desktop. Each round draws a fresh sample, so you can retake it as often as you like.
Translations test whether you recognize a word. Synonyms test whether you own it. Connecting a word to its alternatives inside the language is what lets you rephrase, follow someone else's paraphrase and sound natural.
Each round samples words that carry editor-curated synonyms from our CEFR-leveled decks. You pick the synonym from four options; the wrong options are drawn from words at a similar level and are never actual synonyms of the target, so every question has exactly one right answer.
Questions are drawn across CEFR levels from A1 to C2, and each one shows its level. Early questions tend to be common words with everyday synonyms; the hardest draw on C1 and C2 vocabulary, where telling near-synonyms apart is genuinely difficult.
Every language listed above has enough editor-reviewed synonym pairs for a full quiz. Pick one to start.
