Why synonym practice makes you fluent faster

Fluency is less about how many words you know and more about how densely they're connected. When you can swap important for crucial or essential mid-sentence, you never get stuck — you route around gaps. Synonym questions train exactly that connection. Each word in this quiz comes from our Italian decks, where it also carries a plain-Italian definition, a CEFR level, and register notes — study them free with spaced repetition, or check your overall range first with the Italian vocabulary size test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Italian synonym quiz work?

Each round samples 10 words from our CEFR-leveled Italian decks that carry editor-curated synonyms. You pick the synonym from four options; wrong options are picked from words at a similar level and are never actual synonyms of the target, so every question has exactly one right answer. Retaking gives you a fresh sample.

Why practice synonyms instead of translations?

Translations test whether you recognize a word. Synonyms test whether you own it: connecting a word to its alternatives within Italian is what lets you rephrase, understand paraphrase, and sound natural. Research on lexical networks shows words learned with their neighbors are recalled better than words learned in isolation.

What level is the Italian synonym quiz?

Questions are sampled across CEFR levels from A1 to C2 and each question shows its level chip. Early questions tend to be common words with everyday synonyms; the hardest draw on C1/C2 vocabulary where distinguishing near-synonyms is genuinely difficult.

Is the synonym quiz free?

Yes — free and no signup. If you want to actually learn the words you miss, every Italian deck on Words on Repeat is also free to study with FSRS spaced repetition.

What are examples of Italian synonyms in this quiz?

A few of the 442+ curated pairs: cancellato ≈ annullato (A2); obliterare ≈ convalidare, timbrare (B1); spuntino ≈ merenda (B2). Every entry was editor-reviewed so synonyms are natural, common, and at the same level or easier than the word itself.
