'Friendly' es adjetivo aunque termine en '-ly'. 'Simpático' se dice 'friendly' o 'nice', nunca 'sympathetic' (que significa comprensivo).
shy Nervous about talking to people you do not know. Sinónimos: timid, reserved	tímido	He's too shy to speak first at parties. Es demasiado tímido para hablar el primero en las fiestas.
'Too' + adjetivo + 'to' + infinitivo = demasiado tímido para hablar. Con 'be': 'he IS shy' (es tímido).
talkative Talking a lot.	hablador	My aunt is very talkative on the phone. Mi tía es muy habladora por teléfono.
El sufijo '-ive' forma adjetivos: talk → talkative. Se usa con 'be', no con 'have': 'she IS talkative'.
chattyinformal Liking to talk in a friendly way.	parlanchín / dicharachero	The taxi driver was really chatty this morning. El taxista estaba muy hablador esta mañana.
'Chatty' (informal) viene de 'chat'. 'Really' + adjetivo = muy, en estilo informal. 'This morning' sin preposición.
serious Meaning what you say; not joking.	serio	Are you serious? That's amazing news! ¿Lo dices en serio? ¡Es una noticia increíble!
'Are you serious?' = ¿lo dices en serio?: con 'be'. 'News' es singular en inglés: 'that IS amazing news'.
easy-going Relaxed and not easily worried or annoyed.	tranquilo / de trato fácil	She's easy-going and never argues about small things. Es de trato fácil y nunca discute por pequeñeces.
Adjetivo compuesto con guion: 'easy-going'. 'Never' + verbo afirmativo: 'never argues', sin doble negación.
helpful Ready to help; useful.	servicial / útil	The man at the shop was very helpful. El hombre de la tienda fue muy amable y servicial.
El sufijo '-ful' forma adjetivos y se escribe con una sola 'l': help → helpful. 'At the shop': lugares con 'at'.
pleasant Nice and enjoyable. Sinónimos: nice	agradable	We had a pleasant chat while we waited. Tuvimos una charla agradable mientras esperábamos.
'While' + frase = mientras: 'while we waited'. El adjetivo va delante del sustantivo: 'a pleasant chat'.
embarrassing Making you feel silly or uncomfortable.	vergonzoso / embarazoso	Forgetting her name was really embarrassing. Olvidar su nombre fue realmente vergonzoso.
Falso amigo célebre: 'embarrassed' = avergonzado, no 'embarazada' (pregnant). Los adjetivos en '-ing' describen la situación; los en '-ed', a la persona.
curious Wanting to know about something.	curioso	I'm curious about your trip; tell me everything! Tengo curiosidad por tu viaje; ¡cuéntamelo todo!
'Curious ABOUT something': con 'about'. El inglés usa 'be' ('I AM curious') donde el español dice 'tener curiosidad'.
nosyinformal Too interested in other people's private lives.	cotilla / entrometido	Don't be nosy; it's a private conversation! No seas cotilla; ¡es una conversación privada!
'Don't be' + adjetivo = no seas...: el imperativo negativo de 'be' lleva 'don't'. 'Nosy' viene de 'nose' (meter las narices).
surprised Feeling surprise because of something unexpected.	sorprendido	I was surprised to see him at the party. Me sorprendió verlo en la fiesta.
'Surprised TO' + infinitivo: 'surprised to see'. El inglés usa 'be' + adjetivo en '-ed' donde el español usa un verbo: 'me sorprendió'.
outgoing Friendly and enjoying meeting people.	extrovertido / abierto	You need to be outgoing to make friends quickly. Hay que ser extrovertido para hacer amigos rápido.
'Make friends' = hacer amigos: con 'make'. 'To be outgoing': tras 'need to be' va el adjetivo.
single (adjective) Not married and not in a relationship.	soltero	Is your brother still single, or is he seeing someone? ¿Tu hermano sigue soltero o está saliendo con alguien?
'Single' = soltero, con 'be': 'is single'. 'Be seeing someone' = estar saliendo con alguien (presente continuo).
married Having a husband or wife.	casado	They've been married for twenty years. Llevan veinte años casados.
Estado con 'be married' (estar casado). 'Have been married FOR' + periodo: el presente perfecto indica que siguen casados.
clear Easy to understand.	claro	Is everything clear, or do you have questions? ¿Está todo claro o tenéis preguntas?
'Clear' con 'be': 'Is everything clear?'. 'Everything' es singular: 'IS everything', no 'are everything'.
true Correct; based on facts.	verdadero / cierto	Is it true that you're moving to London? ¿Es verdad que te mudas a Londres?
'Is it true that...?' = ¿es verdad que...?: el inglés necesita el sujeto 'it'. 'You're moving': presente continuo para planes.
awkward Uncomfortable or embarrassing; not relaxed.	incómodo / violento	There was an awkward silence after his comment. Hubo un silencio incómodo después de su comentario.
'An awkward silence' = un silencio incómodo: colocación muy común. 'An' delante de sonido vocálico: 'an awkward'.
anyway A word used to change the topic or return to it. Sinónimos: in any case, anyhow	de todas formas / en fin	Anyway, let's talk about something happier. En fin, hablemos de algo más alegre.
'Anyway' sirve para cambiar de tema en conversación y suele ir al principio de la frase. Se escribe en una sola palabra.
by the way Words used to add something new to a conversation.	por cierto	By the way, did you get my message? Por cierto, ¿recibiste mi mensaje?
'By the way' introduce un tema nuevo y va normalmente al principio, seguido de coma. No se traduce palabra por palabra.
really Truly; very.	de verdad / muy	Did she really say that to you? ¿De verdad te dijo eso?
'Really' va entre el auxiliar y el verbo: 'Did she really say...?'. Delante de adjetivo intensifica: 'really nice' = muy simpático.
maybe Possibly; perhaps. Sinónimos: perhaps	quizás / a lo mejor	Maybe we can meet another day. A lo mejor podemos quedar otro día.
'Maybe' va al principio de la frase y no cambia el orden de las palabras. Es más informal que 'perhaps'.
so For that reason; very. Sinónimos: therefore, very	así que / tan	It was late, so I sent her a message. Era tarde, así que le envié un mensaje.
'So' une causa y consecuencia: 'It was late, so...'. Delante de adjetivo significa 'tan': 'so late' = tan tarde.
then At that time; in that case; next.	entonces / luego	See you at eight, then! ¡Hasta las ocho, entonces!
En conversación, 'then' al final de la frase cierra un acuerdo: 'See you at eight, then!'. Las horas llevan 'at': 'at eight'.
too Also; more than is good.	también / demasiado	Nice to meet you too. Encantado de conocerte a ti también.
'Too' = también y va al final de la frase: 'you too'. Delante de un adjetivo significa 'demasiado': 'too late'.
either Used instead of 'too' in negative sentences.	tampoco (en frases negativas)	I can't come on Friday either. Yo tampoco puedo ir el viernes.
En frases negativas, 'también' se convierte en 'either' y va al final: 'I can't come either' = yo tampoco puedo.
sureinformal A friendly way to say yes.	claro / por supuesto	Can you help me with this? — Sure! ¿Puedes ayudarme con esto? — ¡Claro!
'Sure' como respuesta = 'claro', más informal que 'of course'. 'Help me WITH something': con 'with'.
definitely Certainly; without doubt. Sinónimos: certainly, surely	sin duda / seguro	I'll definitely come to your party. Seguro que voy a tu fiesta.
'Definitely' va entre 'will' y el verbo: 'I'll definitely come'. Ojo a la ortografía: '-ite-', no '-ate-'.
probably Almost certainly; very likely. Sinónimos: likely, most likely	probablemente	We'll probably stay at home tonight. Probablemente nos quedemos en casa esta noche.
'Probably' va después de 'will': 'We'll probably stay'. En negativas va delante: 'probably won't'.
exactly Used to agree completely; precisely.	exactamente / eso es	Exactly! That's just what I think. ¡Exacto! Eso es justo lo que pienso.
'Exactly' solo, como respuesta, expresa acuerdo total. 'Just what I think' = justo lo que pienso, sin traducir el 'lo'.
absolutely Completely; a strong way to say yes. Sinónimos: completely, totally	totalmente / desde luego	Do you want to come with us? — Absolutely! ¿Quieres venir con nosotros? — ¡Desde luego!
'Absolutely' como respuesta = un sí rotundo. Para negar rotundamente: 'absolutely not'.
luckily It is good luck that something happened.	por suerte	Luckily, I saved your number in my phone. Por suerte, guardé tu número en el móvil.
'Luckily' comenta toda la frase y va al principio, con coma. Se forma con 'lucky' + '-ly': la 'y' cambia a 'i'.
honestly Used to show you are telling the truth.	sinceramente / la verdad	Honestly, I don't like this plan very much. Sinceramente, este plan no me gusta mucho.
'Honestly' al principio suaviza una opinión sincera. La 'h' de 'honestly' no se pronuncia.
suddenly Quickly, when you do not expect it. Sinónimos: abruptly, all at once	de repente	Suddenly, the phone rang in the middle of the night. De repente, el teléfono sonó en mitad de la noche.
'Suddenly' suele abrir la frase en las historias. 'Rang' es el pasado irregular de 'ring'.
finally After a long time; at last.	por fin / finalmente	Finally, she answered my message after three days! ¡Por fin contestó a mi mensaje después de tres días!
'Finally' expresa alivio tras una espera y suele ir al principio. 'After' + periodo: 'after three days'.
at first In the beginning, before something changed.	al principio	At first we didn't like each other, but now we're good friends. Al principio no nos caíamos bien, pero ahora somos buenos amigos.
'At first' = al principio, cuando la situación cambia después. 'Each other' = el uno al otro: recíproco sin 'se'.
afterwards After that; later.	después / luego	Let's see the film and go for a pizza afterwards. Veamos la película y luego vamos a por una pizza.
'Afterwards' (británico) va al final de la frase: 'and go for a pizza afterwards'. 'Go for a pizza' = salir a tomar una pizza.
later After the present time.	más tarde	I'm busy now; can I call you later? Ahora estoy ocupado; ¿te llamo más tarde?
'Later' es el comparativo de 'late'. 'Can I call you later?' es la fórmula típica para aplazar una llamada.
soon In a short time from now.	pronto	Write back soon; I miss our chats! Contesta pronto; ¡echo de menos nuestras charlas!
'Soon' va al final: 'write back soon'. 'Miss' + sustantivo = echar de menos: 'I miss our chats', un solo verbo en inglés.
together With each other.	juntos	Why don't we go to the cinema together? ¿Por qué no vamos juntos al cine?
'Together' va al final de la frase: 'go together'. 'Why don't we...?' propone un plan.
a bitinformal A little. Sinónimos: a little	un poco	Speak a bit more slowly, please. Habla un poco más despacio, por favor.
'A bit' + comparativo = un poco más...: 'a bit more slowly'. Es más británico e informal que 'a little'.
nice to meet you Polite words you say when you meet someone new.	encantado de conocerte	I'm Carmen. — Nice to meet you, Carmen! Soy Carmen. — ¡Encantada de conocerte, Carmen!
Fórmula fija al conocer a alguien; la respuesta es 'Nice to meet you too'. Al despedirse se dice 'It was nice meeting you'.
how's it going?informal An informal way to ask how someone is.	¿qué tal va todo?	Hi Tom, how's it going? Hola, Tom, ¿qué tal va todo?
Saludo informal: 'How's it going?' = ¿qué tal? La respuesta habitual es 'Fine, thanks' o 'Not bad'.
long time no seeinformal Words you say to someone you have not seen for a long time.	cuánto tiempo (sin verte)	Maria! Long time no see! How are things? ¡María! ¡Cuánto tiempo! ¿Cómo va todo?
Expresión fija sin gramática normal: se dice siempre igual, al encontrarte con alguien tras mucho tiempo.
never mind Words that mean 'don't worry about it'.	no importa / da igual	We missed the bus. — Never mind, there's another one soon. Hemos perdido el autobús. — No importa, pronto pasa otro.
'Never mind' es una expresión fija para quitar importancia a algo. No se traduce palabra por palabra.
see you soon A friendly way to say goodbye.	hasta pronto	Thanks for a lovely evening. See you soon! Gracias por una velada estupenda. ¡Hasta pronto!
Despedida fija: el inglés omite sujeto y auxiliar ('[I will] see you soon'). Variantes: 'see you tomorrow', 'see you on Monday'.
take care A friendly way to say goodbye.	cuídate	Bye, Anna! Take care! ¡Adiós, Anna! ¡Cuídate!
Despedida cariñosa en imperativo: 'take care (of yourself)'. Muy común al final de llamadas y mensajes.
good luck Words you say to wish someone success.	buena suerte	Good luck with your driving test tomorrow! ¡Buena suerte mañana con el examen de conducir!
'Good luck WITH something': la preposición es 'with'. 'Luck' es incontable: sin artículo.
congratulations! The word you say when something good happens to someone.	¡enhorabuena!	Congratulations on your new baby! ¡Enhorabuena por el bebé!
'Congratulations ON something': con 'on', no 'for'. Siempre en plural: nunca 'congratulation'.
cheers!informal An informal British word for thanks, or said when drinking.	¡salud! / ¡gracias! (informal)	Here's your tea. — Cheers, mate! Aquí tienes tu té. — ¡Gracias, tío!
Britishismo con tres usos: brindar ('¡salud!'), dar las gracias de manera informal y despedirse.
pardon? A polite word you say when you did not hear someone.	¿cómo (dice)?	Pardon? Could you say that again? ¿Cómo? ¿Podría repetir eso?
'Pardon?' con entonación de pregunta pide que repitan; es más educado que 'What?'.
what do you mean? A question you ask when you do not understand someone.	¿qué quieres decir?	I'm not coming. — What do you mean? You promised! No voy a ir. — ¿Qué quieres decir? ¡Lo prometiste!
Pregunta con auxiliar obligatorio: 'What DO you mean?', nunca 'What you mean?' ni 'What means...?'.
I see Words that show you understand.	ya veo / entiendo	It was a joke. — Oh, I see! Era una broma. — ¡Ah, ya veo!
'I see' = 'entiendo': respuesta breve que muestra que sigues la conversación. No se refiere a la vista.
me too Words to say that you feel the same.	yo también	I love this song. — Me too! Me encanta esta canción. — ¡Yo también!
Respuesta corta a frases afirmativas: 'Me too', con 'me', no 'I too'. Para frases negativas se usa 'me neither'.
me neither Words to agree with a negative sentence.	yo tampoco	I don't like horror films. — Me neither. No me gustan las películas de terror. — A mí tampoco.
Respuesta a una frase negativa: 'Me neither' = yo tampoco. No se dice 'me too not'.

'Tener razón' se dice con 'be': 'you ARE right', nunca 'you have reason' (error típico de hispanohablantes).
not at all A polite way to say 'no problem' or 'you're welcome'.	en absoluto / de nada	Do you mind if I open the window? — Not at all. ¿Te importa que abra la ventana? — En absoluto.
Respuesta a 'Do you mind...?': 'Not at all' = no me importa, adelante. También responde a 'thank you' (de nada).
go ahead Words that give someone permission to do something. Sinónimos: proceed, continue	adelante	Can I use your phone? — Sure, go ahead. ¿Puedo usar tu teléfono? — Claro, adelante.
Imperativo fijo para dar permiso: 'go ahead' = adelante, hazlo. Suele responder a peticiones con 'Can I...?'.
hold oninformal Words that ask someone to wait a moment. Sinónimos: wait, hang on	espera (un momento)	Hold on a minute, someone's at the door. Espera un momento, llaman a la puerta.
'Hold on' = espera, muy usado al teléfono. 'Someone's at the door' = llaman a la puerta: el inglés usa 'someone' + 'be'.
what about you? A question that returns the same question to the other person.	¿y tú?	I'm fine, thanks. What about you? Estoy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?
Para devolver la pregunta se dice 'What about you?' o 'And you?'. 'About' no se traduce aquí.
no wayinformal Informal words for strong surprise or a strong no.	ni hablar / ¡no me digas!	She's getting married! — No way! ¡Se casa! — ¡No me digas!
'No way!' expresa sorpresa ('¡no me digas!') o una negativa rotunda ('ni hablar'). Solo dos palabras, sin verbo.
make yourself at home Words that tell a guest to relax in your house.	estás en tu casa	Come in and make yourself at home. Pasa y ponte cómodo, estás en tu casa.
Imperativo con reflexivo: 'make yourSELF at home' (a una persona); a varias, 'make yourselves at home'.
help yourself Words that invite someone to take food or drink.	sírvete tú mismo	Help yourself to some cake. Sírvete tarta, no te cortes.
'Help yourself TO' + comida: con 'to'. El reflexivo cambia con el número: 'help yourselves' para varias personas.
would you like...? A polite way to offer something or invite someone.	¿quieres...? / ¿te apetece...?	Would you like another drink? ¿Te apetece otra bebida?
'Would you like...?' es la forma educada de ofrecer o invitar; más formal que 'Do you want...?'.
I can't wait Words that show you are excited about a future plan.	estoy deseando (que llegue)	The party is on Saturday — I can't wait! La fiesta es el sábado. ¡Estoy deseando que llegue!
'I can't wait' expresa ilusión, no queja. Con objeto: 'I can't wait FOR the party' o 'I can't wait TO see you'.
what a pity Words that show you are sad about some news. Sinónimos: what a shame	qué pena	Laura can't come tonight. — Oh, what a pity! Laura no puede venir esta noche. — ¡Ay, qué pena!
Exclamación con 'what a' + sustantivo: 'What a pity!'. El artículo 'a' es obligatorio, a diferencia del español.
well done! Words that praise someone for doing something well.	¡bien hecho! / ¡enhorabuena!	I passed my exam! — Well done! ¡He aprobado el examen! — ¡Bien hecho!
'Well done!' felicita por un logro; literalmente 'bien hecho'. Aprobar un examen es 'pass', no 'approve' (falso amigo).
my pleasure A polite answer to 'thank you'.	un placer / de nada	Thanks for driving me home. — My pleasure. Gracias por llevarme a casa. — Un placer.
Respuesta elegante a 'thank you': '(It was) my pleasure'. Más formal que 'no problem'.
don't worry Words that tell someone a problem is not important.	no te preocupes	I'm sorry I'm late! — Don't worry, we've just arrived. ¡Siento llegar tarde! — No te preocupes, acabamos de llegar.
Imperativo negativo sin reflexivo: 'don't worry', no 'don't worry yourself'. 'We've just arrived': 'just' + presente perfecto = acabamos de llegar.
it doesn't matter Words that say something is not a problem.	no importa	I forgot the bread. — It doesn't matter, we have enough. Se me olvidó el pan. — No importa, tenemos suficiente.
'Matter' es verbo aquí: 'it doesn't matter' = no importa. El inglés necesita el sujeto 'it'; el español lo omite.
I'm afraid... A polite way to start bad news.	me temo que... / lo siento, pero...	I'm afraid I can't come to the dinner tomorrow. Me temo que no puedo ir a la cena mañana.
'I'm afraid' suaviza una mala noticia y no habla de miedo: 'me temo que'. Va seguido de una frase completa, a menudo sin 'that'.
