'It is easy to' + infinitivo: el inglés necesita el sujeto vacío 'it'. 'Float' rima con 'boat'.
to feed To give food to a person or an animal.	dar de comer a	Please do not feed the animals in the park. Por favor, no den de comer a los animales del parque.
'Feed' va sin preposición: 'feed the animals', no 'feed to the animals'. El pasado es irregular: 'fed'.
to skate To move on ice or on a hard floor wearing special shoes.	patinar	In winter you can skate on the frozen lake. En invierno se puede patinar sobre el lago helado.
'You can' aquí es impersonal: 'se puede'. 'Skate ON the lake': con superficies se usa 'on'. 'In winter' sin artículo, a diferencia de 'en (el) invierno'.
to taste To try a little food or drink. Sinónimos: try	probar; saber a	You must taste the local fish soup. Tienes que probar la sopa de pescado de la zona.
'Must' expresa una recomendación fuerte y va sin 'to'. 'Taste' también significa saber a: 'it tastes good'.
to choose To decide which thing you want from several things. Sinónimos: to pick	elegir; escoger	We chose the fish because it was fresh that day. Elegimos el pescado porque estaba fresco ese día.
Pasado irregular: choose → chose → chosen; también cambia la pronunciación (/tʃuːz/ → /tʃəʊz/). 'It was fresh' = 'estaba fresco': el inglés solo tiene 'be' para ser y estar.
to exchange To change one thing for another, for example money.	cambiar (dinero)	Where can I exchange my euros for pounds? ¿Dónde puedo cambiar mis euros por libras?
'Exchange X for Y' usa 'for': cambiar euros por libras. En las preguntas 'can' va delante del sujeto: 'can I'.
to board To get on a plane, ship or train.	embarcar; subir a	Passengers can board the plane at gate six. Los pasajeros pueden embarcar en el avión por la puerta seis.
'Board' va sin preposición: 'board the plane', no 'board to the plane'. 'At gate six' usa 'at' para las puertas de embarque.
to move To go from one place to another, or to change position.	moverse; desplazarse	Please move down the bus so everyone can get on. Por favor, avancen hacia el fondo del autobús para que todos puedan subir.
'Move' no es reflexivo: 'move', no 'move yourself'. 'Move down the bus' = avanzar hacia el fondo. 'Get on' = subir (al autobús, tren, avión); para coches se dice 'get in'.
to slow down To go more slowly.	reducir la velocidad	Slow down, the road is very narrow here. Reduce la velocidad, aquí la carretera es muy estrecha.
'Slow down' es un verbo con partícula; 'down' no se traduce por separado. Imperativo sin sujeto.
to fill up To make the car full of petrol.	llenar el depósito	We filled up the car before the long drive. Llenamos el depósito antes del largo viaje en coche.
'Fill up' = llenar del todo; la partícula 'up' añade la idea de completo. 'Before' + sustantivo = antes de.
to lock To close something with a key.	cerrar con llave	Always lock your door when you leave the room. Cierra siempre la puerta con llave cuando salgas de la habitación.
'Lock' es un solo verbo; no se dice 'close with key'. Después de 'when' el inglés usa presente, no subjuntivo: 'when you leave'.
to push To move something away from you with your hands.	empujar	Push the door; don't pull it. Empuja la puerta; no tires de ella.
'Push' y 'pull' aparecen escritos en las puertas de tiendas y hoteles. 'Push' va sin preposición: 'push the door'.
to pull To move something towards you.	tirar de	Pull the handle to open the train window. Tira de la manilla para abrir la ventanilla del tren.
'Pull' va sin preposición en inglés: 'pull the handle', aunque en español es 'tirar de'. 'To open' expresa finalidad.
to get wet To become wet, for example in the rain.	mojarse	We got wet on the way back to the hostel. Nos mojamos de camino al albergue.
El inglés usa 'get' + adjetivo: 'get wet' = mojarse, sin verbo reflexivo. 'On the way back to' = de camino de vuelta a.
to cycle To ride a bicycle.	ir en bicicleta	You can cycle along the river to the next village. Se puede ir en bicicleta por el río hasta el siguiente pueblo.
'Cycle' es un solo verbo: ir en bici. 'Along the river' = siguiendo el río.
to shine To give light, like the sun.	brillar	The sun shone every day of the trip. El sol brilló todos los días del viaje.
'Shone' es el pasado irregular de 'shine'. El inglés dice 'the sun shines'; no existe 'make sun' como 'hacer sol'.
to blow To move air, like the wind.	soplar	The wind blew hard all night. El viento sopló fuerte toda la noche.
'Blew' es el pasado irregular de 'blow'. 'Hard' funciona como adverbio (fuerte); 'hardly' significa apenas, ¡ojo!
to catch To get on a bus or train before it leaves.	coger (un tren, un autobús)	We ran to catch the last train. Corrimos para coger el último tren.
'Catch' se usa con los transportes: 'catch the train'. El pasado es irregular: 'caught'. 'Ran' es el pasado de 'run'.
to plug in To connect a machine to the electricity.	enchufar	You can plug in your phone under the seat. Puedes enchufar el móvil debajo del asiento.
'Plug in' es un verbo con partícula: enchufar. Con pronombre, la partícula va detrás: 'plug it in'.
to row To move a boat through the water with oars.	remar	We rowed across the lake in a small boat. Cruzamos el lago remando en una barca pequeña.
'Row' se pronuncia /rəʊ/ y rima con 'go'. 'Across the lake' = de un lado al otro del lago.
to spill To let a liquid fall by accident.	derramar	I spilt orange juice on the map. Derramé zumo de naranja en el mapa.
En inglés británico el pasado puede ser 'spilt' o 'spilled'. 'On the map' usa 'on' para la superficie.
to serve To bring food or drink to people.	servir	They serve breakfast until ten o'clock. Sirven el desayuno hasta las diez.
'Until' = hasta, con horas y tiempo. El sujeto 'they' es obligatorio en inglés aunque el español lo omita.
to put up a tent To build your tent so you can sleep in it.	montar la tienda	It started to rain while we were putting up the tent. Empezó a llover mientras montábamos la tienda.
'Put up' = montar; es un verbo con partícula. El pasado continuo 'were putting up' describe una acción en progreso.
to light To make a fire start.	encender (un fuego)	It was hard to light the fire in the wind. Fue difícil encender el fuego con el viento.
El pasado de 'light' es irregular: 'lit'. Se usa con fuego y velas; para la luz eléctrica se dice 'turn on'.
to smell To notice something with your nose.	oler	The market smells of fresh fish. El mercado huele a pescado fresco.
'Smell of' + cosa = oler a. Con adjetivo va sin 'of': 'it smells good'. Pasado británico: 'smelt' o 'smelled'.
to drop To let something fall.	dejar caer	Don't drop your phone in the sea! ¡Que no se te caiga el móvil al mar!
El inglés usa 'drop' con sujeto persona donde el español dice 'caérsele algo a alguien'. Imperativo negativo con 'don't'.
to paddle To walk in water that is not deep, for fun.	mojarse los pies	The children paddled in the cold water. Los niños se mojaron los pies en el agua fría.
En inglés británico 'paddle' es andar por el agua poco profunda en la orilla. Pasado regular: 'paddled'.
to protect To keep someone or something safe.	proteger	A hat protects your head from the sun. Un sombrero te protege la cabeza del sol.
'Protect from' usa 'from': proteger del sol. El inglés usa el posesivo 'your' donde el español dice 'la cabeza'.
scenic With beautiful views of nature.	pintoresco	We took the scenic route along the coast. Fuimos por la ruta pintoresca de la costa.
'Take the scenic route' usa 'take' con rutas y caminos. El adjetivo va delante del sustantivo: 'scenic route'.
sandy Covered with sand.	de arena; arenoso	The island has long sandy beaches. La isla tiene largas playas de arena.
Muchos adjetivos se forman con '-y': sand → sandy. El adjetivo no cambia en plural: 'sandy beaches'.
rocky With many rocks.	rocoso	The path to the viewpoint is quite rocky. El camino al mirador es bastante rocoso.
'Quite' = bastante y va delante del adjetivo. Rock → rocky: la '-y' convierte el sustantivo en adjetivo.
stormy With storms, strong wind and rain.	tormentoso	The sea is dangerous when the weather is stormy. El mar es peligroso cuando el tiempo está tormentoso.
Para el tiempo el inglés usa 'the weather is' + adjetivo, sin 'hacer'. Storm → stormy, con '-y'.
historic Old and important in history.	histórico	The old town is full of historic buildings. El casco antiguo está lleno de edificios históricos.
'Full of' = lleno de. Ojo: 'historic' = importante en la historia; 'historical' = relacionado con la historia.
shallow Not deep; with little water.	poco profundo	Children can play where the water is shallow. Los niños pueden jugar donde el agua es poco profunda.
'Where' introduce el lugar: donde. 'Shallow' es lo contrario de 'deep'; en español no hay una sola palabra.
flat Smooth, with no hills.	llano	The land near the coast is completely flat. El terreno cerca de la costa es completamente llano.
'Completely' + adjetivo = completamente. Ojo: en británico 'flat' también es el piso donde vives.
wide Big from one side to the other.	ancho	The river is too wide to swim across. El río es demasiado ancho para cruzarlo a nado.
'Too' + adjetivo + 'to' + infinitivo = demasiado... para. 'Across' añade la idea de un lado a otro.
direct Going straight to a place, without stopping or changing.	directo	There is a direct train to the airport. Hay un tren directo al aeropuerto.
'There is' + singular = hay. 'Direct' va delante del sustantivo: 'a direct train', no 'a train direct'.
tasty With a very good taste. Sinónimos: delicious	sabroso; rico	The food at the market was cheap and tasty. La comida del mercado era barata y sabrosa.
Taste → tasty: la 'e' final desaparece al añadir '-y'. Dos adjetivos se unen con 'and'.
fresh Made or picked a short time ago; not old.	fresco	You can buy fresh fruit at the morning market. Puedes comprar fruta fresca en el mercado de la mañana.
'Fresh' va delante del sustantivo. 'Fruit' es normalmente incontable: 'fruit', no 'fruits'.
spicy With a strong hot taste, like chilli. Sinónimos: hot	picante	Be careful, this sauce is really spicy! ¡Cuidado, esta salsa pica mucho!
El inglés usa 'be' + adjetivo: 'it is spicy', donde el español dice 'pica'. 'Really' = muy, de verdad.
salty With a lot of salt.	salado	The soup was too salty for me. La sopa estaba demasiado salada para mí.
'Too' + adjetivo indica un exceso: 'too salty'. 'For me' = para mí, con el pronombre objeto 'me', no 'I'.
freezing Very, very cold. Sinónimos: icy, frosty	helado (de frío)	The water in the lake was freezing! ¡El agua del lago estaba helada!
'Freezing' ya es extremo, más fuerte que 'cold'; por eso no se usa con 'very'. Viene del verbo 'freeze' (congelar).
misty With a thin cloud near the ground.	con niebla	The mountains were misty in the early morning. Las montañas estaban cubiertas de niebla por la mañana temprano.
Mist → misty, otro adjetivo con '-y'. 'In the early morning' = por la mañana temprano.
amazing Very good and surprising. Sinónimos: wonderful	increíble	The view from the tower is amazing. Las vistas desde la torre son increíbles.
Los adjetivos en '-ing' describen la cosa: 'the view is amazing'; con '-ed' describen a la persona: 'I was amazed'.
wonderful Very good; making you happy. Sinónimos: great	maravilloso	We had a wonderful week in the mountains. Pasamos una semana maravillosa en las montañas.
'Have a wonderful week' usa 'have' para experiencias. 'Wonderful' se escribe con una sola 'l'.
awful Very bad. Sinónimos: terrible	horrible	The weather was awful, so we stayed in the hotel. El tiempo era horrible, así que nos quedamos en el hotel.
'So' = así que, introduce la consecuencia. 'Stayed in' = nos quedamos en; sin verbo reflexivo.
huge Very, very big. Sinónimos: enormous, massive	enorme	The cathedral is huge inside. La catedral es enorme por dentro.
'Huge' ya significa muy grande; no se combina con 'very'. 'Inside' = por dentro, sin preposición.
tiny Very, very small. Sinónimos: minute, miniature	diminuto	We ate in a tiny restaurant with only five tables. Comimos en un restaurante diminuto con solo cinco mesas.
'Tiny' = muy pequeño, más fuerte que 'small'. 'Only' = solo, delante del número.
touristyinformal Full of tourists; made for tourists.	muy turístico	The harbor is pretty but very touristy in August. El puerto es bonito pero muy turístico en agosto.
'Touristy' es informal y algo negativo: con demasiados turistas. 'But' contrasta las dos ideas.
ancient Very, very old, from times long ago. Sinónimos: old, age-old	muy antiguo	The city has an ancient bridge over the river. La ciudad tiene un puente muy antiguo sobre el río.
'Ancient' se pronuncia /ˈeɪnʃənt/ y es mucho más antiguo que 'old'. 'Over the river' = sobre el río.
outdoors Outside, not in a building. Sinónimos: outside	al aire libre	In summer we eat outdoors every evening. En verano cenamos al aire libre todas las tardes.
'Outdoors' es adverbio y va sin preposición: 'eat outdoors'. Como adjetivo se usa 'outdoor': 'outdoor pool'.
upstairs On a higher floor of a building.	arriba (en un edificio)	Our room is upstairs, on the first floor. Nuestra habitación está arriba, en el primer piso.
'Upstairs' va sin preposición: 'is upstairs', no 'in upstairs'. Ojo: el 'first floor' británico es el primer piso, no la planta baja.
downstairs On a lower floor of a building.	abajo (en un edificio)	Breakfast is served downstairs at eight. El desayuno se sirve abajo a las ocho.
'Is served' es pasiva: se sirve. 'Downstairs' no lleva preposición ni artículo.
safely Without danger or problems.	sin problemas; con seguridad	We arrived home safely after a long journey. Llegamos a casa sin problemas después de un viaje largo.
Los adverbios se forman con '-ly': safe → safely. 'Arrive home' va sin preposición: no 'arrive to home'.
